Theme 1: Meetings/Minutes

October 27, 2006

Summary: Greater Humboldt Expectations action team, 10-27-06

Most of the meeting was devoted to refining the initial set of draft outcomes to use as a basis for community conversations.

Other points of discussion included

  • Groups to address for feedback. Our next step is to talk with varied groups on campus about our outcome draft. Because of the limited time we have for this important step of the process, we have decided to work though established groups: departments, committees, clubs, and the like. Obviously we cannot cover them all, and certainly not every group will care to be involved, so we will send a message to group leaders (presidents, chairs….) asking if one or two of us could come to one of their regularly-scheduled meetings to present the draft outcomes and get their feedback. Alternatively they could schedule a special meeting if they wish. We would also have a limited number of open conversations, in case someone wanted to provide feedback but did not belong to a group that would schedule a session with us. The message we send to the group leaders would include a bit of WASC Theme One background. Various members of our team are investigating the question of whom to contact in various areas. We’ll discuss this at tomorrow’s meeting, too.
  • Keeping the focus on an integrated whole. We are describing a shared vision of Humboldt graduates – any Humboldt graduates – in terms of the most important ways that their college education at Humboldt shapes the way that they interact with the world. It’s important to keep that focus, and to avoid the temptation to compile a long list of discrete skills and information that we hope students get while they’re here, as that won’t give us a cohesive vision of a “person” to work toward as an institution. So if someone wants to add an outcome to the vision, they’ll need to also suggest which outcome to remove from the vision.

We agreed that at the next meeting we wouldl need to clarify the plan for these larger conversations and sketch out this next phase (e.g., will we continue to meet together as we conduct these conversations? How will we handle the compilation of results? How will we keep accurate records of the campus input? Etc.)
