Theme 1: Meetings/Minutes

October 13, 2006

Summary: Greater Humboldt Expectations, Meeting #3, October 13, 2006

The committee reviewed the Core Values that are listed in the Humboldt Strategic Plan as one way of framing goals and learning outcomes in conjunction with the other information handed out earlier from “Greater Expectations”, Learning outcomes from Edge Hill University, etc.

The core values which seemed to resonate with the identified points from earlier discussions were: #3, #5, #7, #8, #10 (see page 4 of attached PDF file for text of these values.)

Emerging from the conversation were these characteristics which every Humboldt student should demonstrate:

  1. Connect theory and insights gained from active service to the larger community.
  2. Be deliberately involved in diverse community setting, including recognition of one’s own cultural heritage in relationship to that diverse setting.
  3. Demonstrate collaborative skills, including defining goals, envisioning strategies, and implementing actions.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to observe, reflect, and articulate insight in written and oral forms of communication.
  5. Demonstrate active concern for and participation in achieving social, economic, and environmental justice.

Other points discussed:

  • The use of an E-Portfolio as a way for measuring learning outcomes.
  • Whether the Humboldt Learning Outcomes should mirror only those things that make Humboldt distinctive, or whether they should include those elements that are assumed to be part of an undergraduate education. (like understanding one’s cultural and intellectual heritage, communication skills, etc.)
